How big A0 really looks
It is the largest standard ISO sheet, one square metre of paper, used for statement prints, plans and maps. Its long side, 119 cm (47 in), is 70 % of the height of a person 170 cm tall, and 59 % of the height of a standard interior door. In area it covers 1 m², about 16 sheets of A4 paper.
Where an A0 print fits
It suits a large living room wall, the wall behind a king bed and a double-height entrance.
- In portrait, an A0 print is 84 cm (33 in) wide, so on its own it suits furniture 112 to 126 cm wide, such as a desk and a console.
- In landscape, an A0 print is 119 cm (47 in) wide, so on its own it suits furniture 159 to 178 cm wide, such as a dresser, a loveseat and a queen bed.
- Above a three-seat sofa 220 cm wide, one A0 print in landscape covers 54 % of the sofa’s width and holds the wall as a centre piece. For the full two-thirds look, hang two in portrait, 6 cm apart.
How high to hang it
On a bare wall, hang an A0 print with its centre 145 to 152 cm (57 to 60 in) from the floor, the eye level galleries use. Above a sofa 85 cm high, keep 15 to 25 cm between the sofa and the frame, which puts the centre of a landscape A0 at about 148 cm (58 in). An A0 print is one square metre exactly. It needs two hooks and a frame with acrylic rather than glass to keep its weight down.
Framing an A0 print
An A0 print fits a ready-made A0 frame, usually without a mat, since the frame alone is over 85 cm wide.
A0 compared with the sizes around it
One step down, A1 is 59.4 × 84.1 cm, and A0 has about twice its area. The dashed outlines in the drawing show it at the same scale. The nearest size in the inch sizes is 36 × 48, at 91.4 × 121.9 cm, about 10 % larger in area. See 36 × 48 on a wall.
The file a sharp A0 print needs
Print shops ask for 300 dpi, which at A0 means 9,933 × 14,043 pixels. From the viewing distance above, 150 dpi (4,967 × 7,022 pixels) already looks clean, which is enough for most photographs and digital art.
